A finalist in a cookie contest recalls a classic locked-in-a-bakery-overnight dream for inspiration.

Finally, I am there. In front of the platter. I can
smell the soft scent of vanilla and brown sugar circling around and
through the overpowering scent of the chocolate. Butter,
cocoa, milk. I reach for one of the cookies, and find that
they haven’t quite cooled all the way. There is just a touch
of warmth left in them. And I know what that means.
So I begin to slowly split the cookie in half to watch the extravagant amount of chocolate chips and chunks pull apart in a satisfying melted ooze.
